A brief note from the author: Capstone Project

If you've made it this far, I would like to say thank you for taking the time to review my portfolio and my credentials, as well as providing any relevant feedback regarding any of my pieces in the portfolio. I wanted to take a quick moment to preface the work I have done this semester with the underlying causes and life experiences that have led me to the reasons behind why I have done the work I chose to do this semester. So, here are a few things I have done this semester, followed by how those experiences have led to my capstone project, and what I hope to accomplish with my E-portfolio.

Throughout my undergraduate education, I have always been very science oriented. Up until very recently, I always considered writing to be more of a chore than something I actually enjoyed. Two years ago I began working with a nonprofit, community funded detoxification facility for underserved patients suffering from a multitude of drug and/or alcohol addictions (http://www.homeofnewvision.org). I also volunteer to lead four Narcotics Anonymous meetings at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility every week. Through these activities, on any given week I spend between 12 and 28 hours helping patients work through an active recovery plan.

Needless to say, there is never a dull moment working with this patient population, and I have seen a number of things in the past few years that I never thought that I would see. That being said, my work has awarded me tremendous perspective into the psychological mindset of active addiction. For my project, I chose to use that perspective to create a short piece of creative fiction detailing the thoughts and actions of three fictional drug addicts that are loosely based off of addicts I have worked with in real life.

It is my intention to show a progression in my writing from strictly academic science, to the topic of addiction (while still being research/academic based), and finally to taking the topic of addiction and creating an informed piece of fiction with heavy academic and field based research components. Through my project I hope to communicate my knowledge of addiction as a disease by getting into the minds of my characters, while at the same time creating something that is entertaining and captivating to read.

I hope you enjoy reading my project as much as I've enjoyed creating it.
